Adweek: What's your morning routine?
Constance Wu: I like to have a really leisurely morning [laughs], which isn't great because when you work in production, you have a 6 a.m. call time. But when I do have time, I like to get up and read the paper or make coffee, and then after that, I check my computer.
You love posting pictures of your bunny on Instagram. Why a bunny? That's not a very common celeb pet.
It's actually kind of strange, but for some bizarre reason, I've always just had a love and affection for rabbits. But I never got a rabbit until I was an adult. Some people tell me I should have an Instagram just for my bunny, and I probably should, but I haven't gotten around to it.
You're on Twitter as well. Do you have a favorite social media platform?
I like my personal Facebook page a lot just because I like to see what my friends are up to. It's a way to share in their lives when you're too busy to actually be hanging out with them. I also like Instagram not only for social stuff, but just for seeing style trends. I also follow other bunny owners [laughs], and because of that, I find out information, like some new place where you can buy hay or whatever.
Any favorite apps?
I have one app that I use all the time called Rehearsal. It's an app for actors, and it basically helps you break down your script, learn your lines, that kind of stuff. I use it for every episode of my show.
What TV shows are you watching right now?
I just started watching Catastrophe on Amazon, which I love. The two lead actors are just so great together. I haven't started watching the new season of Fargo yet, but I really want to because the first season was so good.
How about podcasts?
I have a new favorite podcast called Punk Assed. It's a podcast about puns. My friend actually does it. I also can tell you about a podcast I don't like: Radiolab.
Why don't you like it?
I think it talks down to me. As a person whose dad is a scientist, I don't like when people romanticize science because I think the facts are amazing and beautiful on their own and you don't need to gild the lily. It annoys the crap out of me. But my boyfriend likes it, so I have to listen to it.
Do you notice a big generational disparity between how the actors playing your kids on the show use social media and how you use it?
The way they talk about social media is different. They are like, "Oh my God, I got 75 likes on this post!" Honestly, even if I get 2,000 likes on a post, showing off just feels tacky to me. But it's not embarrassing to them to flaunt their social media wins. When I was a kid, being mysterious and acting like the world didn't understand you, that was cool. But I feel like for their generation, showing off—if I want to put a nicer spin on it, "loving thyself"—is actually the cool thing. And I do think it's a reaction to the previous generation. Maybe in 10 years, being mysterious will be cool again.
